Gernika 81. If the bird arrives, the bird
leaves Xabier Soubelet, Xubiltz | Elkar (Iparluma), 2018

This work is the final result of a triple project launched by artist and writer Xabier Soubelet, “Xubiltz”, which has created a musical show, a painting work and a novel around the bombing of Gernika. Obviously, three papers express Xubiltzen’s concern about the lack of historical transmission.

The novel plays with the limits of reality and fiction, and the dream is the means to do so. The reader's attention begins with an oneiric episode that moves the characters of Carlism to the Basque conflict. The final is also strong, as the facts narrated in the different stories are confused with symbolic and historical elements and built with the central axis of the musical representation performed by Xubiltzen.

Also noteworthy are some of the stories he uses to elaborate the novel, such as that of Ju and Otto, as well as the ways in which the characters relate, as they look at the facts of Gernika from different angles, with the very present art and the War of 36 from different angles. Linking with the World War.

However, there are some aspects that have crossed me throughout the reading: on the one hand, the novel is composed of numerous chapters with story structure, which are little in-depth in the interior worlds of the characters; on the other hand, some passages prior to the bombardment take the form of the novel, although this conception of the world is broken due to the situation of history, the time and the origin of the character; on the other hand, to integrate history/graphism.

In general, I think it has been successful in the relationships between the characters and in the ways of spinning the stories, in bringing to the narrative different environments of the same time. There are passages as hard as beautiful as they support the novel.
