The strike called by the LAB, ELA and CCOO unions has been widely followed on Thursday. The unions once again denounce the position of the Basque Government, which has expressed its desire to condition the right to strike of this collective: “Imposing excessive minimum services, correcting errors in the order that imposes them at the last minute and using excessively strict interpretations in the application of minimum services.”
However, among the workers who have had the opportunity to strike, there has been a continuation of more than 70%. An example of this is the gathering of hundreds of workers in the human chain under the slogan “Improving working conditions, decided here and now”.
The unions have pointed out that this group is undoubtedly the most feminized area of the Department of Education. “It also has the most precarious working conditions and is undergoing the biggest privatization process,” they add. Since 2009 the agreement, and consequently the working conditions, has not been updated by the workers.
The last negotiating table was convened by the department on 27 January. They also point out that there was no substantive content to add to the table and that they wanted to make a proposal for a pre-agreement to cancel the strike. The workers on Thursday asked the Department of Education to stop convening meetings without content and address a proposal that responds to these demands.
Friday is also a day of strikes in public education kitchens and cleaning. Meetings will be held at the Education Offices of the three Basque capitals at 11:30 a.m.
