Switzerland is holding a referendum on Sunday to resolve the conflict of free movement with the European Union, which affects the Swiss country. According to Swissinfo, the country's main party has asked voters to reject the free movement of persons in the name of "selective immigration". It is therefore possible that this proposal does not go ahead.
On this occasion, UDC, the populist right-wing party, has ensured that the Alpine country suffers "uncontrolled and disproportionate immigration" that "threatens" jobs. It thus launched a new initiative to repeal the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons (FTAA) signed with the European Union in 1999.
"The aim is to restore an identity mark of sovereignty, control of immigration," said UDC's councillor in Geneva vincent Schaller to AFP. "UDC is in favour of selective immigration," he added.
