The federation of ikastolas of Ipar Euskal Herria, SEASKA, will take place on 1 July in Donapaleu. The march will be supported by EH Bai and the LAB syndicate, which support the protest. In the same, students aged 14 and 15 will claim that the exam, the brebeta, which they need to overcome the schooling in the school, can be done in Basque. Correctors who do not know Euskera are those who evaluate the enemies of science subjects in the French state, which violates the rights of students from Basque schools.

The Brebeta tests were carried out between 28 and 29 June this year. The enemies are headed in Pau or Bordeaux and are evaluated by professors who only know French. As the Rectorado told SEASKA, “it is only History and Geography and Mathematics that can be completed in the language of the Basque region”; the examination of science cannot be done in Basque. However, in the four SEASKA centres the decision has been made to speak in Basque. The demonstration, called for this Thursday from SEASKA, aims to call for this scourge to be defended.

As the Mediabask media said, in a press release issued last Thursday by SEASKA, the French Prime Minister announced that he leaves Members responsible. The federation of ikastolas has met with them and has asked the Rectorate to adopt bilingual correctors, but the government has not yet offered them a solution.

Legal modification

Since 1995, the examinations of students in Basque were different from those who studied in French, but in 2016, when the sciences were established as additional subjects, the law changed. The tests carried out in 2017 were evaluated by bilingual correctors, but from 2018 they were corrected by those who do not know Euskera. This, in addition to violating the linguistic rights of SEASKA students, has caused them problems in receiving the evaluation, as it lowers the necessary grades to overcome the schooling.

Ikastola is occupied

A month before the students took the brebeta, on 29 May, some 10,000 people had met in Baiona to support Basque education. Now, in the days after the celebration of the Break, other activities have been organized before the 1 July demonstration. Teachers, students and parents of the Amikuze College of Donapaleu have held the ikastola for three days, until Thursday, to request that the science exams of 14-15 years be evaluated by bilingual correctors.

Eñaut Elosegi, director of Amikuze’s Xalbador College, explained that the copies of the tests have been kept at the school to prevent a national education employee from "sequesters" them and taking them to Pau or Bordeaux. There they want to lead, in Basque, and the attendees stay there “until they reach the goal”. As Euskal Irratia has gathered, Elosegi has asked for the help of the people and has appealed to get closer to school for the duration of the occupation.
