One more year, because of the situation we are experiencing, the Holidays in Peace programme has not been carried out and the 10-12 year-old Saharawi children living in refugee camps in Algeria have not come to Basque families or hostels during the two summer months. Through this programme, Sahrawi children have the opportunity to spend summer outside the desert and the refugee camps, and Basque families can help the Sahrawi people and live with another culture.

To this must be added what the Sahrawi people have been living since November 2020. On 13 November last, the military truce was suspended and, as a result, the Sahrawi soldiers are at war.

Well, in solidarity with the Sahrawis, the associations, agents and host families participating in the Holidays in Peace programme have launched the campaign Messages in the Clouds. Messages in the clouds are writing paper letters in the form of a cloud to maintain the relationship between the Basque children and the Sahrawis. All messages will be sent to Sahrawi refugee camps in November, but the technology will be used to get them there earlier. When writing the message, they ask that a photo be scanned or taken and sent to oporrakbakean@gmail.com.

You will be able to consult on the website Oporrakbakean.eus or on the Facebook page if the message has reached its destination, and you will also be able to see the return messages from the Sahrawi camps, as well as a summary of what was collected during the campaign.
