The Spanish courts have ruled against the Navarrese law of victims of violence by right-wing extremist groups and security forces. A press conference was held on Wednesday.
Fermín Rodríguez, brother of Germán Rodríguez, and Idoia Zabalza, sister of Mikel Zabalza, recall that they do not want to become “legislators, let alone judges”. They have announced that the Government of Navarre has the possibility of enacting another law and have made it clear that a law that does not allow the analysis and clarification of their cases will not be “well received”. Rodríguez and Zabalza point out that such a law would not have been necessary if the judges had carried out the “promised work”.
The victims recall that the repealed law was not “perfect” and could have been improved, but “it was our law.” “The creation of commissions of inquiry left an open door to the study of cases forgotten by ordinary justice” and denounced as an “attack on the sovereignty” of the Navarrese parliament. They admitted that the outcome of the sentence was predictable. “Lately we have some cases that have caused us disgust and rejection,” they say, recalling the sentences of the young people of Altsasu and the rape of Sanfermin.
