A man murders Lourdes del Hoyo, a 47-year-old woman and the mother of two children, on Tuesday afternoon in Orio. At first, a shooting and an explosion were mentioned. It was soon discovered that male violence was a case and that the man killed the woman with a shotgun cut down the canyon and later committed suicide.

This was confirmed on Wednesday morning by the Basque Government security advisor, Josu Erkoreka. He explains that the man had a gun license and the shotgun was his. Previously, he "handled illegally" at home and cut guns off the gun.

Erkoreka explained that according to the testimonies collected, women and men were related, but at this time they were not together. On Tuesday, when the murder was a male chauvinist, they were in a park on Pescador de Orio Street, apparently stopped beforehand.

According to the Security Council, the man was unprecedented and the woman had no request to activate protocols against male violence.

Machista murder

On Tuesday night lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu suggests that we are dealing with a "supposed case of male violence". The plenary session of the Municipality of Orio meets to discuss the response to the murder.

This is the first Machista murder in the Basque Country. Last year five women were killed as a result of male violence and, according to Berria’s report, in 2003, 117 women and 11 children have died.

Concentration

The Women's World March of Euskal Herria has called a rally in Orio on Wednesday at 19:00. They have also announced new mobilisations.

For its part, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa opened a call for silence at 12:00 in the hall of the headquarters of the Foral Palace.
