The Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, reported last Sunday through his official Twitter account of this measure. In a message posted on social media, he stressed that “in New York you have the right to confirm your birth identity. Starting in 2019, all citizens will be able to change the gender marker on the birth certificate, specifying options M,F or X.”
The Municipal Council approved in September the legislation that entered into force on 1 January 2019 and has demonstrated a major advance in the rights of the LGTBI collective. Until now, a letter or legal document had to be submitted indicating that the person agreed with the gender in which he lived. It is no longer necessary.
