The caravan Mugak Zabaltzen, since 2016, brings together activists in the fight against migratory necropolitics. Its objective is to denounce the violations of human rights that occur on a permanent basis at borders and to establish networks of solidarity.

This year, the trip starts on Friday, July 12 from Bilbao. Other points of the Spanish State (Madrid and Valencia-Barcelona) will also be discussed. On their way to Italy, they will meet with other groups of activists. A total of 220 people, mostly women, will meet Padua (Italy), Bihac (Bosnia) and Trieste (Italy), in order to know closely how people are going through migration policies in these territories.

The Balkan route was suspended in 2020, when the pandemic thwarted the annual trip of the Caravan. "We go back on this road because it is necessary to see what happens at the back door or at the ground door to enter the EU, in a context in which the European Treaty on Migration and Asylum has just been adopted in April and an increase in the far-right in the European elections is confirmed," the institution explained, according to El Salto.

Last year they made a trip to Melilla

Last year, the limit chosen was that of Melilla, with 323 seats. Twelve months earlier there had been a massacre of migrants who had taken refuge in the area. The externalization of borders and the constant violation of the rights of people in movement, such as discrimination and violence, are some of the issues that this initiative intends to focus on.
