EH Bildu and ERC call for decriminalisation of claims against the monarchy
- The penal code provides for a prison sentence of between one month and two years for insulting the Spanish monarchy. EH Bildu and ERC call for the repeal of this law.
They propose it in the Senate, arguing that “true democracy should ensure that all people freely express their ideas.”
The European Court of Human Rights has pointed out, for example, that “the Strasbourg Court states that smoking images of the king falls within the scope of political criticism and protects the right to freedom of expression”.
