The bones of Alavese Deputy Modesto Manuel Azkona return to their homeland, 88 years later
  • He was shot by the Francoists in 1936, when he was a deputy for Álava, and the remains of Manuel were deposited in the same grave of the other 42 shot in the town.

The tribute ceremony took place in his home town, Villafranca (Navarra), to Modesto Manuel Azkona Garaikoetxea. After 88 years, he is a member of the Republican Union in his house, along with the other 42 people shot from the town.

He was removed in 1936 without being explained to him by the Francoists, supposedly when he was transferred to the prison of the Fort of San Cristobal. The identification of their remains was achieved last May thanks to the investigation that began in 2016.

Finally, around mid-July, the mortal remains of Modesto Manuel Azkona came to the hands of his relatives in an event held in Vitoria-Gasteiz by the Deputy General of Álava, Ramiro González.

In early July, the Aiaraldea media interviewed Maria Jesús Fuentes Azkona, Nieta de Garaicoetxea, Modesto Manuel Azkona, whom she interviewed.
