According to data from the latest Poverty and Social Inequalities survey conducted by the Basque Government, in the Basque Autonomous Community more than 200,000 people cannot maintain an adequate temperature in their homes during the months of invierno.El the Bilbao Tenant Union has underlined that this figure has doubled since 2008 and that "is increasing as a result of the economic crisis caused by COVID-19".

The problem experienced by thousands of families with housing is closely related to energy poverty, especially in the case of women. "Evictions and the inability to turn on the stove are two sides of the same problem," he added.

At the beginning of the year, the price of light increased by 27% and denounced that many families in the city cannot cope with the facturas.Asimismo, considered that the "pasitibat" demonstrated by the Basque Government and the Bilbao City Hall "makes the right to energy impossible" and therefore a change of direction is "necessary". "The real ban on supply disruptions must go hand in hand with the publication of the energy sector and price control. The universal right to decent housing and the right of all people to energy are closely linked," he explained.
