Barrios was arrested in October 2017 in Berlin and was already considered by the Spanish media as the alleged leader of ETA missing. After being placed in the hands of France, in October 2018 he was released on probation until trial. He must now serve the term of five years ' imprisonment imposed at the trial in Paris on 23 June.
The incarcerated person has been imprisoned in the first hour of the afternoon and, on the understanding that this measure does not respond to the situation after the disappearance of ETA, the Basque delegation in Mont de Marsan has denounced the imprisonment. During his stay in parole, Barrios has lived in Itsasu and has participated in various local initiatives. With this kind of punishment, French justice grants probation if it is ensured that the convicted person is reinstated in his or her country of origin. In the case of Barrios, which despite having a job and being fully integrated in the locality, has been placed in pre-trial detention.
That is what the pacifists have denounced in prison, claiming that imprisonment was not necessary and that it does not contribute to coexistence. Among the attendees was the new mayor of Itsasu, Mikel Iribarren – in the video below – supporting Barrios:
