Holidays for the detention of migrants, a measure that the Spanish Police wanted to implement in Irun
  • The Spanish Police of Irun yesterday approved the measure that rewards the detention of migrants: three public holidays for the detention of a migrant during the weekend, four public holidays for the detention of two or more migrants and more than ten detainees, five. The measure was to enter into force on 1 July, signed on Tuesday by the Head of the Aliens and Borders Brigade of Irun. Shortly afterwards, the union of the Spanish Police Jupol denounced the measure on social networks and, at the time, the Basque Police Headquarters suspended the measure.

They will also investigate why the head of Irun gave the green light to such a measure.

Harassment of migrants

In the vicinity of Irún, Urruña and Hendaia, by administrative constraints, reception networks and migrants themselves have denounced on more than one occasion the police persecution of migrants. Fleeing police controls, several migrants have lost their lives trying to cross the border through potentially dangerous routes.
