The local voters in Biarritz voted unanimously in favour of the use of the local currency on 1 April. In particular, the councillors would receive part of their remuneration in the Basque Country, if they so wish. In addition, a technical commission will be set up and a development plan for the Basque Country will be defined.
Therefore, Biarritz – which also includes the Commonwealth of Iparralde – is the 34th house in the Northern Basque Country which is on the net of the Basque currency. The houses of the people that use the local currency are as follows: Ahetze, Aintzila, Ainhoa, Anhauze, Azkaine, Aiherra, Baiona, Bidarrai, Ziburu, Ezpeleta, Gabadi, Gamarte, Itsasu, Hazparne, Hendaia, Bastida, Lehuntze, Makea, Maule, Lekorne, Oze-San
Since the Euskal Moneta Association created the Euskoa in 2013, the use has grown steadily to exceed 5,000 users – 4,000 individuals and 1,200 professional structures. Three million Basques traded in the spring of last year.
In addition, the purchases made in Euskoa are solidary and finance the local associative fabric: 3% of the amount of the purchases is attached to the association chosen by the partner. Through this system, Euskal Moneta has distributed 130 000 Basques to over 60 associations.
