He started his political career as Mayor of Arbona. From 1971 to 1977 he was mayor of the Labortana town of Bermeo and was subsequently appointed Department Counsellor in 1986. He held this post until 1991, when he was mayor of Biarritz. That same year, Bernard Marie, the father of Michele Alliot-Marie, who was a member of the French Government, took the seat and formed a coalition for the second round with the lists of exabertzale and socialists Jakes Abeberri. Centrist Michel Veunac continued in Munich’s mayor 23 years later, until 2014, when he was proclaimed mayor of the city. Between 1992 and 2001 he also served as Senator for France.

Messages of condolence are disseminated on social networks and emphasis is placed on all that has been brought to the city of Biarritz. "It was Biarritz and it was Biarritz itself. Thanks to her passion she managed to make Biarritz an international city", you can read in the tweet of Socialist Member Colette Capdevielle. The President of the Commonwealth of Iparralde and Mayor of Baiona, Jean-René Etchegaray, has welcomed Baiona's neighbours as "auzapez begitakarra". "The dreamer mayor leaves us with the image of a builder who has brought modernity to the Imperial City," he added.

Two cases against him

He had two causes against him. The first, which started in 2013 and ended in 2018, was sentenced to a fine of 300,000 euros for a crime of scam. He was convicted of the cancellation of more than 4,000 parking fines between 2009 and 2013. The other was charged with misappropriation of public funds, but was justified by the Court of Appeal of Pau in 2019.
