South Face of the Mountain
  • From a tragedy that took place in the Basque mountaineering in 2001, Pumori, the documentary daughter of the mountain, also shows us the suffering and hope of the inhabitants of the highest lands of the world, the south face, often hidden in Himalayas.

The parents of Arantxa Gurrutxaga and Peio Arrue, one of the five Basques killed by an avalanche on Mount Pumori (7,161), will return a year later to Nepal to meet the girl who approached the place where her son died and took the last photo with her. This is where the relationship between Suku Maya and the Basque family begins.

In addition to paying tribute to the deceased mountaineers, in this work the spectator will know the living conditions and human dignity of the people of that small country through the brunette face and the smile of Suku Maya.

The documentary was produced by Baleuko, in collaboration with mountaineer Alex Txikon and sponsored by ETB. After passing through many rooms in Euskal Herria, Suku Maya has been made with the help of the Iñaki Ochoa Foundation of Olza-SOS Himalaya.
