Western Europe is currently the epicenter of the Covid-19 epidemic: More than 55,000 deaths
  • The United States now appears to be the epicenter of the Covid-19 epidemic, as you can read in many media these days. Unfortunately for Europeans, the truth is not that: Europe is, or more specifically, the rich western Europe, the whole population that has accumulated the most deaths from coronavirus. If we look closely at the statistics, the comparison between them leaves very little doubt.

It is true that in the United States it is expanding at full speed and is causing victims of the coronavirus that has been described in Wuhan. But it is just as true that in some countries in Europe, in addition to not being able to control yet the speed that the epidemic has brought about since previous weeks, the virus is causing the toughest massacres in Britain. So, starting to talk about the epicenter of the pandemic... Where does Covid-19 have its warmer space?

In the table that the Worldometers service, which performs an excellent statistical monitoring of the pandemic, updates at 04:58 in the morning of April 8, it can be seen that so far it has caused 82,096 deaths worldwide. Of these, 12,857 occurred in the United States.

The United States has a population of 400.5 million (Wikipedia). The comparison of the United States with a European country with so many millions of inhabitants makes no sense. It would be more appropriate to compare with the European Union, with some 447 million inhabitants, some 523 million British citizens already on the verge of Brexit in January.

This is a simple exercise in the search for approximate references, will the reader not be too angry at the introduction of Romania in the calculations with reference to Western Europe and not to Switzerland or Norway which are not members of the EU, etc. In order to compare even better the similar population figures, let us therefore consider the 13 EU countries with the highest number of victims, which make up the "Covid-19 top 13", and we will note that with these percentages we have a group of 396 million inhabitants: Germany, Austria, Belgium, United Kingdom, Spain, France, Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, Portugal, Denmark and Romania. These 13 countries concentrate the majority of coronavirus victims in Europe: 56,000 deaths.

This is the picture that Western Europe is showing to the world today: of the 82,000 coronavirus deaths worldwide until April 7, 3,333 have occurred in China, about 12,900 in the United States.

At the moment, the epicenter is in Europe. And at the epicenter are also us, the Basques.
