The body of the 41-year-old man was found in his cell during the count of Monday morning prisoners in Martutene prison. The news of the death of the prisoner was given by a group of prison workers, and the information was confirmed by the General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions.

The deceased is a 41-year-old man, from whom only this information has been made public in prison, claiming that the data protection law prevents further information from being provided.

The Spanish Penitentiary Organization has specified that a space will also be needed to know the cause of the death of minors. However, some sources consulted by the Department of Safety have indicated that man may have died from overdose in the hospital.

The Spanish Penitentiary Organization has reported that an autopsy will be carried out on the corpse and that judicial and internal investigation will be carried out.

Another number on the death count inside prison

A group of prison officials reported that on 20 December another prisoner died in Martutene prison, which could be the second death in less than a month.

These two deaths in prisons are not isolated cases. In 2019, five prisoners died in Zaballa prison.
