Moroccan security forces have arrested dozens of Sahrawi activists
  • Sahrawi activists have denounced that dozens of Sahrawis have been detained in the last few hours in the operations of the Moroccan security forces in Western Sahara, where tension increases following the Moroccan military intervention against the civil protests in Guerat. On Friday, Morocco launched a military operation in the Guerguerat area in western Morocco. The Armed Forces General Staff announced the establishment of a "security barrier" at the Guerguerat border crossing after the protests of civilians saharauis.El. SEAD Prime Minister Mohamed Mohamed Eluali believes that Morocco lost opportunities for a peaceful solution when it violated the cease-fire agreement, he told Berria. He has ensured that all the agreements on the return to peace are on the table, including armed struggle.

Demonstrations and protests have been announced in Aaiun, the capital of Western Sahara controlled by Morocco, and flags of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (RSD) have been displayed. The security forces have responded and at least seven young activists have been arrested, the Equipe Media has reported to the Italian media. On Saturday, 14 November, it was the second day of mobilizations in Aaiú n.Por its side, the Nushatta Foundation, a human rights agency based in Western Sahara, has denounced the attacks by Moroccan forces on the houses of the Sahrawi people.

Response from the European Commission and the United Nations

The Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell, met on Sunday, 15 November, with the Moroccan Foreign Ministers, Nasser Bourita and Sabri Boukadoum, to address the latest developments around El Guerat.

The High Representative has attached importance to respect for the cease-fire agreements in force since 1991 and has reiterated the EU’s determined support for the efforts of MINURSO, the UN Security Council. The Moroccan Minister for Foreign Affairs has assured the Moroccan high representative of his country’s commitment to respect the truce.
