The PSN and Navarra Suma seem to turn their backs once again on the Basque and the linguistic rights of the citizens of Navarra. In compliance with what has been said by both sides in the Foral Parliament, on this occasion the 440 inhabitants of Mañeru, located in Valdizarbe, will be harmed. They have everything in their favour: in December the city itself was unanimously asked for the people to move from non-Basque to mixed area, and Geroa Bai, EH Bildu, Podemos and Izquierdo Ezkerra their proposal.

But the political groups of the opposition president, María Chivite, and the opposition president, Javier Esparza, with an absolute majority, showed that they will vote against the reform of the zoning law. This was noted in the words of PSN spokesman Ramón Alzórriz, “We are not in favour of changing the law at the moment.”

If the position is maintained, PSN Navarra will meet with Sumario at the plenary vote in February, with an absolute majority and without the will of the City of Mañeru. However, the coalition formed by UPN, PP and Navarra Suma does not totally exclude the will of the City of Mañeru. “In principle we do not intend to expand the mixed area,” said Marta Álvarez of Navarra Suma.

For Alzórriz there are more important “day-to-day concerns”. Therefore, the interest of the Mañeruanos is not discussed about Euskera, just as the situation of minority peoples in linguistic rights is not discussed: “There are municipalities that want to move from mixed to non-mixed zones and this is not taken into account”. In other words, it seems that they will not allow the mornings to learn Euskera in public school or will deny them the possibility of speaking in Euskera in public services, for example, not even directly at their request.
