Serious clashes in South Korea after the president was dismissed for corruption
  • The Constitutional Court of South Korea has approved the removal of President Park Geun-hye. The National Assembly made its proposal in December, when it was linked to the biggest corruption scandal ever in the country. This is the first time that an elected leader has been removed from office in South Korea. Elections will have to be held within 60 days, and the geopolitical balance of the region may be compromised.

Park Geun-hye has been accused of pressuring South Korean multinationals to put large sums of money into the companies of a businessman close to him. The scandal has splattered South Korea’s main business group: I'm talking about Samsung. The company’s successor has been arrested on charges of bribery and misuse of public money.

The Court ' s decision has given rise to a wide range of responses. The president’s detractors welcome the news, but his supporters take to the streets to protest the impeachment. There have been fierce clashes between police and demonstrators and two people have been killed.

Park came to the presidency in 2012 with a conservative program and a promise to take a tough stance against North Korea. She was the first female president of South Korea. He had very good results at the polls, but his good reputation declined and in November last year hundreds of people demanded his removal. Finally, the National Assembly made a proposal to remove him from office, which has been accepted by the tribunals. Disqualification will deprive him of his immunity and, consequently, he may be tried.

The next president will face geopolitical problems

The confirmation of the impeachment and the call for elections have arrived in turbulent times. The US and South Korea have begun deploying an anti-missile system (called THAAD) to fight North Korea, and the decision has provoked China’s outrage. At the same time, North Korea continues its weapons program and this week launched four missiles into the Japanese sea. The party that wins the election will have to handle this situation.

The date of the elections has not yet been determined, but they will take place in the coming months and the main opposition party, the Democratic Party of Korea, is the preferred party among the population.
