Supermarkets Lidl, on the border for animal ill-treatment
  • The NGO Equalia expands the images of a giant farm dedicated to the breeding of chickens in Germany. There are a number of irregularities, in particular the ill-treatment and congestion of animals, where live chicks eat at their dead side. This farm supplies Lidl supermarkets.

The workers pick up the chickens in their neck and beat them to death or sacrifice their crooked neck. Birds near death, with serious infections, diseases or deformations that prevent access to food. These kinds of images can be seen in the video recorded by the NGO Equalia on a German hacienda. The animalist entity did not determine the location of the estate, but referred only to Germany. However, it has been reported who supplies this property: Supermarkets lidl.

Four are the bad practices reported by animalists in raising chickens they sell in Lidl supermarkets: On the one hand, the high density of chicken; on the other, the selection of fast growing breeds and the appearance of diseases such as ascites, sudden death syndrome or contact dermatitis; on the other hand, the failure to meet minimum standards in the environmental sphere; and finally, dizziness by electric bath. That is, they immerse the birds in electrified water to make themselves dizzy before they die. The European Commission has pointed out the need to ban this process because of the suffering of animals.

In this respect, several European animal protection organisations have called on Lidl to sign the European Chicken Commitment. The aim is that by 2026 all the animals sold in supermarkets meet minimum requirements.

It's not just Lidl

Eight months ago, Equalia challenged Carrefour supermarkets with another study. Here's the video.
