Libraries for resistance
Nafarroako Saharako Kabiak Elkartea 2024ko maiatzaren 13a

Leaving behind books, libraries and their benefits in April, Kabiak Sahrawi wishes to recall the dark side of his history, which is of greater importance in defending the identity and survival of peoples. We are talking about the destruction of the age-old and usual libraries that have brought to mankind one of the greatest cultural tragedies, that is, of an unfortunate historical practice that is still being used as a genocidal weapon against peoples and cultures. Thus, we recognize the power of books and claim the importance of creating, caring and maintaining libraries in any situation, even if it is very bad. Those who love Euskera and those who live in Euskera also know about the importance of these identity shelters.

Most of mankind ' s great libraries have disappeared in war conflicts. The enemy knows how to put his finger on the wound. The voluntary consumption of libraries has been used as a weapon of censorship, and originates in hatred and in the attempt to put an end to the culture, language and idiosyncrasies of the peoples who have preserved them. The disappearance of heritage forgets and destroys personality and, consequently, undermines the success of societies. The destruction of libraries is a tactic that should disappear forever.

When the Library of Alexandria was destroyed, we lost one of the treasures of the ancient world of heritage that we will never recover; in the destruction of the current Ninivense Library of Iraq, 22,000 tables of clays, written on both sides, disappeared, the great works of the Constantinople Written Library, the Expertise of the Madrinopla Written Library, which it had always extirpated.

The Saharawi West, unjustly forgotten by the Spanish Government, cannot have its own library, because Morocco is also culturally occupying the Sahara.

Unfortunately, this genocidal practice of war is still in force. Israel is now perpetuating itself in Palestine. Israel has destroyed the libraries of Gaza a few months ago, because the library to complete the genocide also has mandatory war objectives. Israel has bombarded and eliminated the Gaza General Archive, the Municipal Library, the University Libraries, the Mosques Libraries, the prestigious Al Mansur Library and Publishing and hundreds of archives and bookstores and warehouses. How is it possible that the human being remains so evil and continues to reproduce historical events that we should only remember so as not to repeat?

Western Sahara also had the anecdote of the cultural tragedy in the magnificent Smara library, now occupied by Morocco. He was also destroyed in 1913 under the orders of French colonel Mouret, when the expansionist desires of the French settlers destroyed their heritage and eliminated their identity when they applied their motto. By that time, the prestigious Saharawi political leader Sheij Ma el Ainin, who from a very young age developed a pedagogical vocation and a great interest in reflection and research, had several written treaties on religion, poetry, medicine, grammar, flora, customs and travel. Driven by the struggle against colonialism at the end of the 19th century, Sheij founded the city of Smara, the only city of Saharawi origin throughout the Western Sahara, as all others have a colonialist origin. There he kept over 5,000 books, which unfortunately disappeared forever.

The Saharawi West, unjustly forgotten by the Spanish Government, cannot have its own library, because Morocco also occupies the Sahara culturally. The Sahrawi people are forbidden to express any cultural expression of their own, such as the use of the Hassani language for studies.

That is why we will continue to promote the Bubisher project, which is in force and has already been stabilized in the refugee camps, free cultural spaces for the enjoyment of refugees, libraries and Bibles of resistance managed by the Sahrawi themselves and to their liking.
