After failing last year, I visited Iruinco again in 2024. It's been the sixth for creators, the second for me. Unlike the premiere, this year I have an expectation created around the event. For those who do not know (until recently, including myself), the Basque carnival in Pamplona is that of Iruinco, in libertut format. The show combines dance, music, popular theater and bertsos, referring to local (and not so local) issues that are in full boiling. Satirical review of the year.
Early in the morning, kokoxuris and kokobelzas have begun to revolutionize the Old Town of Pamplona. After walking through the streets, at 12:30 the kokoxuris, the kokobelzas, the musicians and the bertsolaris have come to the plaza and the party has begun.
I remember speaking in the 2022 performance of East Hedoi Etxarte, Chill Mafia, Kai Nakai, Ernai and GKS, among others. This year, institutional policy has gained weight. The situation in Navarre has given much to talk about lately and has represented it as a year-end dance taking place in American institutes. Who will choose the calibite quarterback to go to the dance? The members of Navarre are drifting, every time they see the Asiron girl drooling Txibite and surrounding him Ibarrola, Caballero and the Socialist Council of Euskal Herria.
With this account, the careless give way to the bertsos of Sarai Robles and Subai Hill. Then the kokoxuriak returned to the dance, thus completing the triangular succession between four and five times the protagonists. Continuing with satire, the Croads have shown their solidarity and contradictions with Palestine. What is the right manifestation? Bilbao, Donostia or Pamplona? Sarai Robles rounded the light: “It’s just a way to feel better.” Eta puna.
Actors have dealt with a broad agenda: 5G, request for authorization from the Socialist Topagune of Euskal Herria, beers without alcohol from LABA, disappearance of anarchists… And, of course, Jon Maia. And, of course, a bit of wood for the Gipuzkoans who are going to ‘invade’ the Navarros campsites. They have performed almost two hours and in the end they have danced leaps in Borobil by the kokoxuris and many of the spectators (where they have noticed who the Non-Chalonese are and who we are the foreigners).
The possibility of creating Oxala de Iruinco in every corner of Euskal Herria, if we had a commitment and courage. Nonsense shows us that laughing is healing and necessary. Criticism, self-criticism, fun and citizenship. Basque Country needs more from Iruinkoko.
