The festival is 47 years old, and between 16 and 21 October, through lectures and workshops, different areas of Basque cinematography will be worked. Under the motto “The Always New Film”, the festival aims to make a wink to the young people who want to tell the new film and the new historias.Tambi will also pay tribute to Itziar Ituño for his contribution to audiovisual works in Basque.
It is the oldest Basque film festival held in Lekeitio. Since 1978 it has become a meeting point for Basque cinema and a reference point for the Basque audiovisual. This year’s edition, however, aims to approach the view of the new generations.
In this sense, the festival will promote various initiatives that work in the pedagogical aspect. They have created the “Harrobia” project in order to bring the youngest to Basque cinema. It will carry out activities with students who promote creativity in the audiovisual field. The experimentation space “Klixka” and the creation workshops will be some examples.
At the center of the festival, however, there will be a Competition from the Official Section. 20 short films will compete for the Golden Goose. According to the organizers, these include “courageous and innovative work”. Films shall be eligible for the following prizes: Best Film Award, Best Direction Award, Best Screenplay Award, Benito Ansola Award and EiTB Audience Award. The jury, composed of filmmaker Ainara Elgoibar, actor Martxelo Rubio and bertsolari Nerea Ibarzabal, will be in charge of selecting the winning films to the best director and screenplay. The EiTB Ikuslea public prize will be awarded by popular vote, and the Benito Ansola Prize will be awarded to authors born from the year 2000.
On October 19, coinciding with the Official Section Competition, the Basque Film Gaze Awards will be held in Ikusgarri. This year’s edition will reward Itziar Ituño for his “special contribution” to the Basque audiovisual world. “We want to acknowledge a universal actor who has started his career in Euskera,” said the members of the organization in an interview at ETB.
