Four months buried in Zaldibar
  • It is four months since the outbreak of the Zaldibar landfill on 6 February and the burial of Alberto Sololuze and Joaquín Beltrán. His family and friends, nervous and indignant, continue with popular mobilizations against the company Verter Recycling and the Basque administration responsible for monitoring and controlling waste dumps.

So far, the Basque Government has cleared its hands, holding the company that exploits the landfill responsible for the disaster. However, the Ertzaintza report has recently been leaked, which should be of great concern to the Basque administration. Logically, the company operating the landfill is primarily responsible for the disaster. However, the reform of the 2015 Penal Code, in these cases, introduces criminal responsibility to companies and the administration that leave the waste, as an entity in charge of surveillance and control.

The inspection of landfills is carried out by the Department of the Environment of the Basque Government, but the control of transport to the Department of Safety and the observation of the materials of origin to the Industry. Consequently, three departments of the Basque Government participated in this disaster, whose political and criminal responsibilities will be resolved. The Basque Government cannot wash its hands and look only at the company, it must also demand responsibility. And let us not forget that the most serious thing about that disaster was the murder of two workers.

Precisely, the lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, exhibited the profile of a politician in the service of the Basque capital, Mariano Rajoy, Antonio Basagoiti. Even though we are constantly seen in Teleberri, that day we did not see it on public television.
