A worker from the FCC (subcontracted from the Commonwealth of the Region of Pamplona) suffered a work accident on 10 July. Iosu, who was working on emptying trash cans, had to go up into the truck's cabin because a container got hooked. He slipped and fell to this height, suffering a severe head injury. He died on Friday.

The garbage collection is normally carried out by the truck driver, but if the container is blocked, the drivers have a protocol to perform the work safely. The procedure requires the presence of other workers, the person responsible for the work and the use of special stairs to ensure safety.

The LAB trade union has denounced that the workers had already warned that the new company trucks caused "many problems" in carrying out their work. In addition, although there was a “protocol” for these situations, all workers “did not know”.

LAB has accused the cleaning company of "focusing exclusively on its economic benefits": “Once again, FCC has contracted fewer staff than is necessary to make more economic use of the service, which has caused it to be unable to get started in the safety protocol, causing a new fatal accident.”

The Abertzale syndicate has focused on the management's responsibility for accidents at work and the preventive tasks that must be done to avoid them: “In the development of contracts awarded by the Administration, security measures are not complied with because the economic interests of these companies are above the life of the workers. We call on all administrations and their managers to include in the awards the clauses of occupational health in order to enforce the rules of prevention. Because for decades we have been shown that if they don’t force us, they won’t comply with occupational health regulations.”

The works council has called for a strike on Tuesday to denounce the occupational accident that has occurred. LAB recalls that Iosu is the eighth worker to die this year in Navarre and 33 in Euskal Herria.
