Court No. 21 in Madrid is conducting a study on a corruption case within the General Union of Workers (UGT). The investigation is based on the work of Mayka Tomás Gómez, who once performed administrative tasks. It seems that Tomás falsified hundreds of checks, presenting them as compensation from the Wage Guarantee Fund (FOGASA) and bringing the beneficiaries of such compensation right. It is estimated that EUR 4.5 million were stolen.

These checks were collected by the UGT management of Madrid. Among the high managing directors identified are the former UGT secretary-general in Madrid until 2021, Luis Miguel López; the former deputy secretary-general, José María Hernández; who was secretary of administration until 2021, Emilio Trillo, and the one who later took office, Clemente Sánchez.

The top UGT officials in Madrid reportedly received checks of up to EUR 7,000. It is estimated that between 2019 and 2021 they were given a minimum of 37 cheques for a total amount of EUR 114,175. All this money apparently came from a current account that kept the multi-annual state aid and affiliate contributions.
