Traders in the area of Baiona ask to "open small shops or close all shops"
  • The French Government has banned the sale on large areas of non-priority products in order to avoid "unfair competition" in retail with small trade. Small shops in the localities have been closed since 31 October and consideration will be given in two weeks to whether or not the Government will authorize opening. Baiona traders will mobilize on November 4 to demand "the opening of small shops or the closing of all shops" and the blocking of sales on platforms like Amazon.

Prime Minister Jean Castex announced on 1 November that department stores will not be able to sell non-priority products and has promised additional aid of EUR 200,000 for traders who have been forced to close.

On 4 November a mobilization of traders in Baiona

On 4 November at 14:00 p.m., traders in Baiona, Angelu, Biarritz and San Juan de Luz will mobilize in front of the sub-prefecture of Baiona to report the damage caused by the confinement "when they have respected all the measures". “Between March and May we have suffered huge losses in our business, this November gut is another blow and many may not be able to overcome the situation,” said Mikel Irastorza on the web Kazeta.eus. They have called for the opening of small shops or the closure of all of them, as they have explained. In particular, the demand includes the exclusive sale of food on large commercial surfaces and the exclusive sale for professionals on large areas such as Leroy Merlin or Castorama. And they've asked the French government to block sales on platforms like Amazon or cdiscount, among others.

Journalist Irastorza Kazeta.eus explained that they have called on the public to participate in the mobilisation on 4 November and have announced that they are receiving significant support, among others, from the closest politicians and from the president of the Chamber of Commerce.
