Amid the whirlwind surrounding Gernika’s Lointek basketball team, Angie Bjorklund first spoke about the issue of a team player. Until last October, Gernika's player Bjorklund posted on his Instagram account the reasons Loint left the team.
The former Lointek player has clearly stated that he met with the club to hold several meetings and express his concern. Bjorklund stresses that he transferred those responsible who did not feel “at ease and safe” in the work environment: “Was this not enough?” He also stressed that he fought hard with the club’s management to get Mario López out of his position: “They told me that he had the right to stay.” Bjorklund complains that the sports team told them that the report of sexual abuse was “false” and that everyone had to keep it “secret”.
The Gernika Lointek basketball team is having a huge impact. Club coach Mario López was arrested last week for sexual abuse of a player, and since then the leaders of the Gernika-Lumo Feminist Network and the sports team Lointek have given contradictory versions of case management. The Feminist Network notes that it met in July to denounce the club and take action, but the club has said that until now they “knew nothing”. The feminist movement has denounced the club’s “complicity” in the lawsuit, without taking action so far.
First match in Gernika
On Wednesday, 20 December, the first match took place in Gernika, after the case was published on Sunday. They played at the Maloste Sports Club against the Belgian group Kangoeroes. Before starting the match, the leadership of the basketball team and the players meet with a banner with the slogan “No More”. Several fans showed their discomfort through several messages on the billboard to denounce the “bad” management of the sports team in the case.
