The UN Commission on Human Rights has published a report on the complaint lodged by Oriol Junqueras, Raül Romeva, Josep Rull and Jordi Turull. In fact, former Vice-President Junqueras and former members Romeva, Rull and Turull were removed in 2018 for a crime of rebellion for organizing the 2017 referendum. Members of the Parliament of Catalonia were elected in the elections in December 2017.
According to the Commission, the decision to dismiss independence politicians was not reasonable and objective. The report resolves that it was arbitrary and without guarantees of impartiality. In fact, even if they were charged with rebellion, they were convicted of sedition, a crime that is not linked to violence, and in that case the law does not provide for impeachment.
Already in 2019, the working group against arbitrary arrests of the same commission called for the immediate release of Junqueras, Jordi Sancez, Romeva, Rull, Dolors Bassa, Joaquim Forn and Jordi Cuixart.
