Katalonski-Euskalonski and Basques around the world
  • It does not lead me to mention these programmes, especially when the coronavirus crisis has hit the tourist sector heavily, but along with tourism there are other more or less important aspects such as the opinions, hobbies or nostalgia of the social groups of a particular identity, and that is why I take the articles of these public television programmes.

Euskalonski is inspired by the Katalonski programme of the Catalan network TV3, as the Poles and some Slavs call it the Catalans. In April 2018 they began to broadcast in Catalonia, with the presentation of the new Icelandic musician HalldøMár, who on his arrival in Barcelona 25 years ago did not know he was Catalan. It is estimated that in the world there are about 12,000 foreigners who have learned Catalan, and the objective of the program was to interview them and explain to them why they have learned Catalan to value the pride of being Catalan in the heart of the Catalans.

The objective of the Euskalonski program is also similar: sometimes there are foreigners who have learned Euskera, their motivation to learn Euskera, and on other occasions they speak Euskaldunes who live abroad, away from the homeland due to work or love relationships, and who in most cases think of returning. Pello Reparaz is a musician, composer and producer from Arbizuarra, and manages to carry out a program that looks easy and curious.

As for the audience data, the second Katalonski program was seen by 390,000 Catalans, 17.5 of the screen fee and, in general, by 318,000 viewers and 13.7 of the fee. It has been promoted by the Catalan language policy, among others, and from the Catalan point of view it has been an appropriate programme for the dissemination of Catalan.

According to the Euskalonski programme, it reached the highest number of spectators and screenings in the programme dedicated to the Basques of Brussels: 20,000 spectators and a 3% share (10.7% among the Basque public). And in general, it has had a number of viewers of 12,000, and a share of 1.8%. Regarding the audience data, the difference is evident, as well as between the vascospeakers and the vascospeakers, and also regarding the awareness, between the vascospeakers and the Catalans.

As we have said, it is a pleasure to see and is ideal to make you feel the pride of being Basque. It is a pity that the number of spectators is not higher. The reasons will be many, but, if I am not mistaken, it does not have a low number of viewers compared to other programmes.

The Basques around the world also started in 2018. It would surely be inspired by Spaniards in the world and/or by Ces français du bout du monde (TV France). In Spanish, the objective is for Basque citizens to appear - it seems that most of the time there are those who do not know Euskera; you do not have to know it for that program! -, you ask them why they have gone to live abroad and if they have any nostalgia, because they notice the void...

This is a light frivolo program in some cascabel cholis, in which folkloric or geographic or gastronomic vasquism predominates. In addition to missing their relatives and friends, it is usually said that they lack mountains, beaches and food from here, and there are very frequent signs of fans by the football team of their historical territory. The program dedicated to Miami reached its historic peak with 229,000 viewers and reached a screen share of 10.9%, but, of course, in Spanish.

From the Basque point of view, public resources should be allocated to the Euskalonski programme or the next one, located in prime time, and it is recommended that the programme become increasingly Basques in the world, interviewing foreigners who have learned Euskera and contributing to ruin the Basque complexes living abroad; Spanish in the world or Ces français du bout du monde (see).

Would this not be the most coherent vision and behaviour of Basque public television, without always relying on audience data?
