On 20 April, the latest mass mobilisation against tourism took place in the Canary Islands, which criticized that everyday life had become “unsustainable”. Six months later, the City of Bilbao has denounced that the case has been put on the table and that since then there has been no change.
The mobilizations started from the most touristic areas of the islands, where screams were heard as "Canarias has a limit", "Canarias is not for sale" or "We are foreigners in our territory".
Protesters have highlighted that, after six months of protests, "nothing has changed" and have called for political measures to curb the rise of tourism in the Basque Country. Protesters have denounced that the administration had set up a table to respond to the mobilisation in April, but have criticised that "it was only a strategy to calm the situation."
In view of this, they have called for the fight on the streets of the Biscay capital. In addition, they have stressed the need for a space in which they can take into account the voice of residents and make proposals. In addition to the government authorities, he also referred to visitors coming to the area: “We want the people who visit us to understand that this tourism model is unsustainable and destructive to our land.”
