126 international personalities call for the release of Josu Urrutikoetxea
  • A total of 126 international personalities have stated that the life of the Basque political prisoner is "at risk", as the age of Urrutikoetxea adds to the aggravated risk of coronavirus in prisons. Among the signatories are the former French Minister of Justice, Christiane Taubira, the philosophers Toni Negri and Slavoj Zizek, and the Nobel Prize Abraham Behar, which is awarded by the Basque Language Academy.

The manifesto has been published on the Mediapart portal by 126 personalities from a wide variety of areas of Basque society. "France sends a very bad message to the peace processes in the world with Josu Urrutikoetxea in jail," they said in the manifesto.

Urrutikoetxea's conditional release has just been denied

Josu Urrutikoetxea, imprisoned in La Sante (Paris), will be turning 70 this year and his state of health is very vulnerable. The French Court of Appeal had just denied him conditional release, even though he presented the certificate of the French prison leader La Sante. The manifesto underlines the role of Urrutikoetxea in the armed struggle.
