The neighbours of Karrantza have decided to remove bullfights from the local festivities through a popular consultation. The proposal for its deletion has received 343 votes, while 252 people have voted in favour of it being maintained. Thus, from next year, no more bullfights will be carried out in the Navarra locality.
The consultation organized by the City Council is aimed at residents over 16 years of age, with a participation of some 600 residents of the 2700, which accounts for 25% of the total population. In contrast to the 2013 consultation, in which 409 people voted in favour of maintaining bullfights, on this occasion he chose to delete the majority.
The mayor of Karrantza, Raúl Palacio, told ETB that "it is now up to respect the will of the citizens" and "to rethink the organization of the festivities". The promoters of the consultation, including the young people of the town and the party commission, have argued that "the culture of bullfighting has lost its strength" and that the EUR 11 000 spent on bullfighting "could be devoted to other holiday activities". Now, they will continue to use the bullring, but under different targets.
