The United Kingdom will use the boat prison to preside over migrants travelling to the country. It is already on the island of Portland and the authorities plan to launch it in two weeks. In total, it will be able to accommodate 500 prisoners. The authorities have explained that this is a “cost reduction” measure for migrants, which represents a daily expenditure of EUR 5 million and allows for “cost reduction” thanks to the ship.
Counter-measure voices have been heard in recent days, such as the conservative politician Richard Drax, who has pointed out that immigration policy must be looked at again, but that the boat is not a “response”. The decision of the authorities has also been denounced by human rights organizations and their neighbours.
Before, Geder publishes that it has been used in the Netherlands. They also had hundreds of shy migrants who reported cases of sexual exploitation and unfortunate health conditions.
Anti-immigration law
The boat is not the only measure they have taken against migrants, as the law against migrants has just been passed in Parliament. As a result, migrants who arrive illegally on British territory will not be able to seek asylum and will have the power to stop it immediately and send it to their destination.
The Act has received many criticisms, including the United Nations Organization that the law is contrary to international law on migrants. Volker Türk, High Commissioner for Human Rights and Filippo Grandi, High Commissioner for Refugees, also did not welcome the new law: “It will have profound consequences for people in need of international protection.”
