Sixteen beaches in Lapurdi have been closed during the weekend, due to the low quality of the water. The rains that have fallen in recent days have caused the poor quality of the water. In all of them the red flag has been placed, which will also wave indoors.

A toxic seaweed, called ostreopsisa, has been found on the beach in Biarritz. This beach, which was first closed three years ago, was for the same reason. It's the algae that's generated when it rains a lot and that water builds up on the coast. Ostreopsis grows above the bottom, covering macroalgae, rocks and pebbles. Being microscopic, you can't see it in isolation at the naked eye, but if you multiply, the layer that covers the bottom of the sea is exposed. This algae generates a marronaceous viscose foam on the surface. It can cause skin problems in case of contact and flu-like symptoms in case of inhalation.

Jellyfish in San Sebastian

Jellyfish also travel in the last few days along our coast. On Wednesday, the rescuers located four carabine jellyfish on Ondarreta Beach in Donostia-San Sebastián, while on Friday, the Guardia Civil sea services received seven more before reaching the beach. The situation is not surprising, as the authorities have explained, although there may be more cases in the coming days.
