"When I heard the riots I hid under the table, now I pick up the phone and go out to the street to record"
  • “I’m 11 years old, I’m Palestinian, I live in Nabi Saleh and I’m the youngest journalist in the world,” says Janna Jihad Tamimi (USA, 2006). When he was seven years old, he began to spread the news of all the arrests, murders and incidents that took place in the town on the occasion of the occupation through social networks. The girl who speaks from time to time in accordance with her age and from time to time in the form of an adult has been designated by the Israeli Intelligence Agency Mosad as a dangerous person and a threat.

Did you start this on your own or was it driven by someone?

It was my idea. Then not a single journalist came to our country, what was happening here was silent, I felt helplessness, I wanted to show the world what the children of Nabi Saleh lived.

How do you remember your childhood?

I'm still a kid! –with a laugh–. But when I was younger, when I heard the riots, I was running under the table. Now I pick up my cell phone and go out to the street to record everything.

And were you able to understand the situation? Did you know who you were and who they were?

Oh, yes, of course. I have grown up in this environment since I was 0 years old, and at home I have always heard adults talking about occupation. My friend Mustafa was killed when I was four...

Now we pass a lot of journalists from Nabi Saleh.

It is never enough, because something happens here every day and every family has a lot of painful history to tell. It is impossible for foreign journalists to have the same look as those of us who live the occupation first hand, but in general, you do a pretty good job.

Thinking about the future, are you optimistic?

I have a lot of plans! First of all, I dream of a free Palestine. As for me, I would love to study Political Science. I would also like to be a journalist to report on the problems of other children in the world. Thirdly, I would like to design traditional Palestinian costumes. I also want to be an artist to help children manage the traumas resulting from violence through drawings. And finally, I’m going to be a player of the Barcelona football team!

Apart from spreading information, in what other ways do you create resistance?

It can be done in many ways! You can abess for Palestine, learn traditional dances, participate in demonstrations... to continue living in our homes is also resisting!
