Irun City Hall does not cut 47 trees, neighbors are still fighting
  • The City Hall wants to cut another 47 stems from the same street due to the fall of three trees in the Artia de Irun district because of the strong winds of last year, but the neighbors are convinced that the decision is "totally unbalanced" and that there are alternatives. “These trees are in good shape and are beneficial to the neighborhood,” they say.

“They absorb the pollution of the road and take the view and noise of the cars away, have great scenic value and provide a green space to our neighborhood full of bricks and cement,” said the neighbors. The tilos are located on the street before the Bidasoa River, next to the marsh of Plaiaundi, in Txingudi, protected. Neighbours have recalled that Plaiaundi is a Special Bird Protection Area: “It is the only one in Gipuzkoa and is a very special space in the migratory processes carried out by protected birds from the western end of the Pyrenees.” In this sense, they have explained that trees also help.

Instead of cutting the trees stabilize

The association Amigos de Artia says that other measures can be taken without damaging the environment, such as the correct pruning of trees (“what has not been done so far”) and the way to stabilize them to prevent the wind from melting them.

Neighbours in the neighbourhood continue to fight for the preparation of a second report containing alternatives to felling the stems. They have started a collection of signatures to support the initiative and last weekend they planted the Solidarity Tree in the neighborhood, claiming symbolically.
