Instagram is the favorite social network of Basque youth
  • The social networks that have grown the most in recent years are Tik Tok and BeReal. Among young people, 40% say they also use the Basque language. It uses Spanish 97.9 and English 62.4%. Instagram is the social network most used daily by the youth of the Basque Autonomous Community (79.2%) and especially by women (84.9%). The two fastest-growing social networks have been Tik Tok and BeReal. Most women aged 15 to 19 use it daily. Those who have come down are Youtube, X (formerly Twitter), Snapchat and Twicht. Facebook's predominant use has declined.

According to the report, as in previous surveys, once again, “very few young people” have acknowledged using social networks to link (Tinder, Meetic, Grinder, etc.). The percentage of people using three or more social networks daily has increased (72% in 2023). 61.7% of young people follow some youtuber, influencer or gamer.

Content Generator

One in ten young people generates content on the Internet (9.5%). These are mostly photographs or video games.

Men, above all, create content related to photos and video games. Women are the ones that have to do with life. The most active group in content generation is that of men aged 15 to 19 years.

40% use Euskera

97.9% of young people use Spanish in social networks. Most also use English (62.4%). Four out of ten young people use Euskera (40.7%). 13.1 per cent of young people use another language, especially those born abroad. From 2022 to 2023, the use of all languages, but especially English, has increased. The young people who most use Euskera are the Gipuzkoans (52.9%), followed by Biscayan (34.9%) and Alaveses (32%).

Harassment

29.3% of young people have felt that they have ever been persecuted. They claim to have received messages, unpleasant comments, insults and threats from one or more people on social networks. This is indicated by 36.3% of women versus 22.6% of men. 15.3% of youth say that what they have ever lived on social media has been sexual harassment.
