India records 6,000 new coronavirus cases in a single day, the highest number so far
  • There are more than 118,000 infections in the country, of which 3,583 have died. New data released this Friday offer over 6,000 new cases in a single day, the highest so far. New infections have increased by 5% in the three CAV territories.

The country is still confined, from the moment until the end of the month, but the Government has softened its measures and made crisis management available to local authorities. “This increase in cases is due to the fact that people’s movements are being allowed. But from a general point of view, the exponential increase has been lower than in the rest of the world,” Giridhar Babu, professor of epidemiology at the Indian Public Health Association, told Reuters.

Indonesia is in the same state with 973 new infections. This country has also recorded the highest data recorded so far, with a total of 20,796 cases and 1,326 deaths on Friday.

Twice the crisis

In India, coronavirus has been added to natural disasters. Cyclone Amphan, the strongest in recent decades, has hit India’s neighbours and neighbouring Bangladesh hard. At least 82 people have died, most of them electrocuted, or from falling trees, according to the same sources.

Three and a half million people have been evacuated, which has prevented more deaths, according to the same sources. However, the coronavirus has made evacuation work difficult, as the shelters have not been fully filled to maintain security measures. But in addition to human damage, the cyclone has also caused material damage: Houses, streets and sewerage systems have been destroyed in a territory of 400 kilometres. In the face of this situation, the Government is committed to creating an emergency fund of more than $130 million.
