Puigdemont’s complaint is yet another example of the tension between ERC and Junts per Catalunya in Catalonia. Since Catalonia opened its way to seek independence, the tensions between the two parties have been continuous, but at the most important moments they have managed to reach consensus.
But throughout 2018 the gap between the two political forces has been widening and with the latter denouncing the division becomes more evident in the eyes of the public.
In the publication Digital was born, Oriol March writes that, according to the speaker, the initiative of Puigdemont can be understood differently: According to Junts per Catalunya, Torrent had already known since January that Puigdemont was going to appeal to the Constitutional Court, as the vice-president of the Parlament, of the Puigdemont party, Josep Costa, met him to inform him of the matter. ERC, for its part, says that "you have not heard of the decision".
The spokeswoman for the Govern ment, Elsa Artadi (also from Junts per Catalunya), wanted to downplay the new Tuesday, claiming that it is a "technical issue". For Artadi, the possibility for Puigdemont to appeal to the Constitutional Court is an intermediate step for the matter to be transferred as soon as possible to European justice.
However, JxC and ERC do not agree on this either: for Republicans, recourse to the Constitution is not “essential” to bring the issue of Puigdemont to Europe.
Following the publication of the news and the initial reactions, members of both parties have turned to trying to calm the media storm. There are only a few weeks left for the trial to begin against the political leaders who led the independence process in the Supreme Court and Catalan independence is not interested in reaching that moment in an atmosphere of division.
