Basque political prisoner Iñaki Bilbao Goikoetxea began the hunger strike early on 9 September in the Port III prison in Bilbao. Then the Pro Amnesty and Anti-Repression Movement (AEM) announced that, in addition to the hunger strike, Bilbao refused to leave its cell: “This means that you will not have backyard hours and that you will not keep any communication, visits, or telephone communication.”

The prisoner has already announced that his claim was to achieve "an independent, socialist, united and Euskaldun Basque Country". With this claim, Bilbao made a month of hunger strike in May and June 2017, which in 30 days stopped with 16 kilos lost and had already started drinking water.

On this strike, he was transferred by court order to the Hospital of Bilbao on 29 September to analyze his state of health, although he was soon transferred back to Puerto III prison.

A demonstration in solidarity with Iñaki Bilbao took place last Saturday, 10 October, in the streets of the Basque capital. According to AEM, more mobilizations are called for these days in several localities of the Basque Country.
