I Fiesta de las Ikastolas. Comic Contest on the siege of Amaiur Castle
  • The festivities of the ikastolas have created the Comic Contest with the objective of converting into comic tales relevant facts of the history of Euskal Herria. Aimed at young people aged 14 to 16, the theme of the first edition is the site of the Castle of Amaiur (1522). Teachers have a very nice excuse to work history in class, but especially comics, a genre that is often "marginalized."

This is what Mikel Begoña, writer of comics and librarian, told us in the interview we published two weeks ago: "The comic, being art, is interesting to transfer it to class, not only to work on how a comic is made, but also to foster reading. Teaching is sometimes very rigid and it is difficult to insert new material. A few years ago [between 2014 and 2017] we organized open days in Bilbao, within the comic book competition. We contacted centers offering artistic baccalaureate, gave some workshops and the students presented their work to the competition. If the comic does not work in artistic baccalaureate…".

Therefore, we invite teachers (literature and art) to take advantage of the comic book competition created by the ikastolas festivities to approach this genre in the class.

Siege of Castile in cartoons

The siege of the troops of Castile and Aragon lasted five days, between 15 and 19 July 1522, until the castle defending the Army of Navarra was defeated. That's the subject that young people should bring to the comic book. The winner’s work will be published in Xabiroi magazine in October 2021.

Work must be submitted in Basque before 30 April. They can be performed individually or in groups, being the free technique. To submit to the competition it is not compulsory to be a student of a ikastola.

The rest of the bases are available on the website of the Federation of Ikastolas.
