A safe school is claimed after being hit by a car
  • The claim that the school environment is a safe space without a car is not new, not even at the Pagasarribide public school in Bilbao. They have been fighting for danger for years, and this week a car is hitting a student and his mother at the door of school. Parents start mobilizations.

This Monday, the 7-year-old student and his mother were captured by the car driver at the door of Pagasarribide school, on the pedestrian walkway, when entering school. They were admitted to the hospital, but it hasn't been serious.

Especially in the hours of entering and leaving school due to the dangerous environment, the educational community of Pagasarribide has been asking for measures for years: a traffic light, a bollard, a bus station transfer… but the answer of the City Council of Bilbao has been that it will install more police officers to ensure safety.

After the accident, families recover the claim and on Tuesday they cut off the road, "Safe access to school now!" under the slogan. In the coming days, mobilisations have also been announced, once again, to denounce the situation and call for solutions.

The Rebellion in Schools

This school between the neighborhoods of Larraskitu and Errekalde is not the only one in this situation. Also in Bilbao, in the vicinity of the school in the Atxuri district, it has been reported that there is little space for pedestrians and that intense traffic leads to dangerous situations. If there is no solution, the parents have put themselves in the zebra crossing at the children's entrances and exits.

In short, an urbanism that takes into account the school environment is one of the demands of the educational community. For example, the movement in the Matxinada Schools, born in Catalonia and arriving in Bilbao, requires that the surroundings of the school become a safe pedestrian space, without cars, without pollution or noise.
