The teaching syndicate Steilas de Hego Euskal Herria has made this proposal "in the most appropriate way" to finish this course and face what is coming. Given the difficulties and doubts that have generated the measures to deal with coronavirus in education, the union has called for "minimum measures to be taken inevitably and immediately". Specifically:
Steilas says that the starting point for this diagnosis should be: "Assessment of each student by the teaching teams and evaluation of the situation of the center by the management teams". "It is essential to analyze the situation of all students," said the professor.
The union has stressed that the next course students will need maximum personalized attention, "especially those who have been in the most vulnerable situation in the last quarter of the course."
For Seteilas, the Department of Education should take advantage of the deep diagnosis it has proposed at the end of this course and that, depending on this diagnosis, it should provide the institution with "resources of all kinds". The "minimum" resources available to the union are:
- Cover all replacements.
- Approve requests for staff requested by the centre for duplicate work in classrooms.
- Increase the number of professors (PDI) who have the function of strengthening the Basque country to the newcomers.
- Increase of Therapeutic Pedagogy staff.
- To reduce the ratios of students that may exist per classroom so that "the attention to students is the most appropriate possible".
- The institutions guarantee free public WiFi for all students.
Steilas has also called for the suspension of the Public Employment Offer (OPE) planned for 2020.
Steilas has asked the Department of Education to "change the prism of attending to students with special educational needs because it has become clear that they are second-year students with the management of the pandemic".
Steilas has made this specific requirement to the PNV, currently in the Basque Government: "We demand an investment commitment of 6% of GDP in public education," he added. He asked the other political parties "not to protect budgets until this condition is met", added lehendakari.
He has asked the PNV to "abandon" the policies of recentralization and "start building the way to a proper educational system, with measures adapted to our immediate reality".
The Government is studying the possibility of keeping schools open during the summer so that pupils with difficulties can attend school voluntarily. On this measure, Steilas says: "The opening of schools in July, instead of bridging the gap, may be the opposite" (in this news we fully reflect the union's position on this measure).
