As we have heard, a new procedure has been put in place: in order to be able to receive the honour registration for their work, the selected students must make a new presentation. As a novelty, this year Euskaldunes students have been asked to present their Tfno in Spanish or English, as some teachers are not bilingual. They have, of course, been suggested to them with cordiality, without any discrimination whatsoever.
To begin with, it has to be said that the suggestion made by those who have power is nothing more than an order. Only imposition, on the student in vulnerable situations. If the opposite had happened? If it had been suggested to Castilian speaking students to make their presentation in Basque?It is evident that what happened undermines the equality in which health activity is based and hardly conforms with the image the university should give. We are aware that you cannot learn the full degree in Euskera and that medical students have fought for their rights. We are aware that many members of the University are trying to provide an adequate response, both in the rectorado and in the deanship of the Faculty. No prize, no tribute to students or teachers, at least from the institutions, or from the Basque culture. Health professionals, essential for the normalization of the Basque Country, do not like the Basque academy, according to EiTB.
This has meant a long string, but a short victory. The situation is much more serious, a systemic problem with deep roots, probably worse in health than in the UPV/EHU.
Every student has the right to learn their language. Right to cultivate and defend your Tfno. in Basque. But the essence and purpose of our activity is patients, focused attention on the gene is the key. The care process is not the same regardless of the patient. That has expired. Care should be provided to patients, taking into account their nature, language, identity, gender, religion, origin, living conditions and others. And that, in itself, requires attention in the patient's language, both in Basque and in Spanish or in French, in oral and written form, anywhere and at any time, at all levels.
It will hardly be learned by students from the Faculty of Medicine and Nursing if they are not taught from the beginning. Students, whether or not from the Basque or Spanish branches, as well as professors, should adapt to this need.
In this sense, every teacher must adapt to the linguistic needs of the students, just as every physician must adapt to the linguistic needs of the patients. If this problem is not solved, i.e. if it is distinguished between language and care (in short, distinction between patient and care), this type of unexpected events, errors and errors will be repeated.
In a bilingual setting, all professionals should be bilingual: in clinical activity, in research, in training, in management. We need care per patient, not per doctor. And that has to be made clear from the very beginning, not the end.
