Language selection trap
Bergoi Madernaz del Pozo 2024ko otsailaren 08a

Recently, they have been oppositions of teachers and a kalapita has been created, as some of the candidates have performed the exams in Spanish and not in Basque. Many people have perceived the possibility of performing the Spanish exam of those who have to teach in Basque as something unlogical, I enter that group.

Those of us who have made other objections, in my case I have presented myself to an opposition from Osakidetza, have had the opportunity to carry out the examination in one of the two official languages. I'm not going to tell you how many of us did the test in Basque, because we wouldn't get to a percentage.

I have some doubts about this. Can you choose the language? Do we act on an equal footing? Is it lawful for a teacher who has to teach in Basque to take the Spanish exam?

Let's take another example: the film Migrazioa has been broadcast around Christmas. This film has been in some theaters both in Basque and in Spanish, in others only in Spanish and in most cases the number of sessions and the length in Spanish has been much higher than in Basque. Is it lawful for this film to be broadcast in three languages, Basque, Spanish and French? Looks like it does, right? They say that that is the freedom to decide, but 99% of the films that are broadcast in the movies are given in Spanish and the Basques have no choice.

The linguistic option is a trap, when we live in an absolutely diglosic situation the condition of a Castellanoparlante is fully normalized and the Basques have to make a great effort to consume or do anything in Basque.

Therefore, in this country where it is said that there is freedom to choose the language, Castilian speakers have the right and the facility to carry out all their activities in Spanish or French, while Basques have repeatedly violated the right to choose the language, as in the case of films, for example, 99% are in Spanish.

The linguistic option is a trap, when we live in an absolutely diglosic situation the condition of a Castellanoparlante is fully normalized and the Basques have to make a great effort to consume or do anything in Basque.

In order to facilitate linguistic choice, we have launched a series of proposals and tools from the Basque Country, which I believe is important to disseminate. Some of them:

You have the Basque job search portal www.lansarean.eus, in which the material for performing the competitions and the collection form has been created. If you want to consume in Basque, you can do it in entities with the Bai Euskarari certificate, by checking the map: https://baieuskarari.eus/eu/ziurtagiridunak. To find out what is in Basque on screens www.zernonikusi.eus you can visit the website. And there are other tools that I'm not going to put here.

It is not easy, but it is in our hands to make Basque whenever possible!
