Berakah evictions three families in one year for the social work of the church of Vitoria-Gasteiz
  • The Berakah Foundation was born with the goal of “helping people who don’t have resources,” but this year it has left more than one family on the streets. The last eviction took place on 31 October, when a family in Vitoria-Gasteiz was evicted after the parish priest confirmed its demand.

Berakah is a social work of the parishes of Santa María and San Vicente Mártir de Vitoria-Gasteiz that offers services to people without resources such as housing, dining rooms, food banks, Spanish classes and legal advice. The Housing Network Auzo Bizi denounces that when distributing and managing resources they have "arbitrary and subjective practices," he denounced.

The family was evicted last Thursday from Berakah's housing program, but after denouncing the foundation's "irregular measures", she has been fired by relatives. According to the Euskadi Housing Network, they demanded that the family pay for electricity without having to show receipts. The family rejected this measure and other "submission demands" and Berakah denied access to other services, such as food and clothing, they reported. This practice of moving around the house has been repeated on several occasions, as explained by the users of the site in the video report that is uploaded to Hala Bedi (part in Spanish).

The Housing Network Auzo Bizi reports that practices such as irregular activities, blackmail, electricity and water cuts, fake contracts and the like are common. The movement has achieved a housing alternative for the family in the Casco Viejo de Vitoria-Gasteiz. However, they stressed that this is a "structural problem" and denounced that as long as housing is a commodity, "it will not be a right".

In favour of free housing

Jointly convened by all housing unions in Euskal Herria, the mobilization for the right to housing will take place on 14 December in Bilbao. They have called for mobilization "in defense of free and quality housing and against the farce of politicians and institutions". Under the slogan “No to business, guarantee the right to housing! ", have submitted the call.

The Socialist Housing Union of the Basque Country, AZET, Batu Elkarlaguntza Sarea, Saretxe, Haritu Elkarlaguntza Sarea, Galdakao Elkarlaguntza Sarea and Bizik Auzo De Vitoria-Gasteiz have been convened for this year.
